CRACOW - the city viewed from the tops of the mounds (hiking tour)

 

The tumuluses have been formed for centuries. In a distant times they had played the role of graves. They had also been a place of defence and observation. Later the mounds were formed in order to memorize important historical events and men of merit that had already been gone. There are four famous tumuluses in Cracow: the mound of Wanda, Kościuszko, Piłsudski and Krakus.

Our route leads us on the two most important mounds of Cracow from a historical point of view, both of them were formed in the memory of two outstanding Polish men: Tadeusz Kościuszko and Józef Piłsudski. The tour has its beginning on the mound of Piłsudski. This tumulus (of Liberty and of Independence) is the newest and the biggest one. It was begun to form in 1934 and finished in 1937. Inside there is the soil of all places of battles during the First World War where Polish soldiers used to fight. The mound in 35 meters high and its diameter is 111 meters.

Then we cover The Route of Two Mounds on foot admiring a beautiful area of Wolski Wood and get to the Mound of Kościuszko (it takes about two hours). The Mound of Kościuszko - was dedicated to a national Polish hero. It was started to be formed in 1820 on the hill of St. Bronisława. A diameter of a base is 80 meters long and it has got only 8.5 meters on a peak. The mound is 34.1 meters high.
